Citrus japonica is a small slow-growing evergreen shrub. Its fruit closely resembles that of the orange, but it is much smaller and can be eaten without peeling. The flowers are very similar to the orange or lemon flowers. From all the citruses kumquat is the one flowers and fruits the latest in season. The autumn cool temperature helps the fruit to sweeten. It prefers a partly sunny location. Suceptible to pests and diseases, and little pruning needed to develop a strong structure.
